Keep the water on the right

Looking at the weather forecast it seemed we were about to have the last day of summer, well it wasn’t due to be glorious put it that way. Not exactly snow and ice but a definite bit of rain on the way so we needed a little adventure.

The Ria Formosa is tidal and depending on the time of day you can walk four yards from Cabanas mainland before being submerged or, time it right, you can walk for miles. We remembered friends saying the walk to Cacela Velha was really nice (thanks to said friends for becoming first followers of the site). So bearing in mind everything we’d seen on Ray Mears and Bear Grylls programmes we set off prepped for anything the Atlantic Ocean could throw at us. It did get a little hairy at one stage with a 25cm leap across an open ravine that could have seen us snap a nail had anything gone wrong.

As you’ll be able to deduce from the fact I’m posting this, we did make it unscathed, in the end we probably only had 4 hours of tide to spare though…….. But once again it is proof of what a beautiful place we have chosen to live as this is 20 minutes away from our front door on foot. Let’s hope it’s far enough away from the beaten track that the summer hoards don’t find it…
