You might struggle to get this deck chair on the beach

“One man’s rubbish is another man’s gold” according to the old proverb and we’ve certainly managed to make use of a number of the items so generously “gifted” upon us by the previous owners’ loose interpretation of rules around emptying a property.

However this time the work has been a little bit more ambitious and a little bit more than a coat of paint. As part of adding decking to the roof terrace we wanted to integrate some extra seating into the construction in the form of a bench. We could have bought some brackets to attach to the walls or used joists to build a frame but why not recycle what we already have?

As part of a dated dining set there were eight chairs sitting unused that could be utilised as the base for a bench which was essentially a big, long seat with some decking boards attached. So off to the garage we go armed with a selection of power tools and a semblance of an idea / plan.

The almost immediate realisation that the depth of the seats wasn’t enough for an outside bench that would need to accommodate large cushions and be used for reclining wasn’t enough to dissuade these intrepid DIY’ers.

After some stripping down, sawing of a manual and electric nature and then reassembling, we had three double-depth seats that as long as you didn’t look at from any closer than the same street would pass as the originals.

All that was then required was the outer covering of decking boards and the transformation was complete. See how the wonder unfolded below….
